First time poster and first time designer.

I am making a "Yahoo" style portal for my home town, not an official site or anything, but I hope it will become popular.

Here are the details:

The town's colors are Green and White.

The town is 40,000 people, about 75% of them over the age of 50.
My mom told me that she thinks ALOT of businesses would advertise on the site for a nominal fee. (Maybe $75 a month)
Most people in Carlisle are on dialup.
The town so far has no Official website for people to meet and greet on, or actually do anything on.

I have all the scripts for the site, but I have only uploaded the front page for comment.s

Please look and tell me what you think.

It needs to be easy to read, look professional, load fast and be eye catching.

NONE of ht elinks work yet, I havent made them work yet. Please try the mouseovers.

Yes It is ok
Maybe a few too many Buttons
and Links
But I have seen worse

One comment ,I know the Links are not live yet.
But the label requesting people to CLICK the Link on top right corner is against that advertisers TOS . Most advertisers prohibit any click requests

Here is what I noticed.

The site is going to be way too busy for people that old man. As it is, most don't know how to use the internet. I would also not make it auto stretch. I would say definately town down the vibrance of color and size. Make it easy to use for young and old. Mostly, you are creating for 75% of elders. So make sure they can handle it. You stated they are on mostly dial-up which makes me assume they are like my grandma, and don't even know what a web page is...

hmm... aside from the above comments, site looks a bit funny in firefox. some parts are not where they are supposed to be. also i would suggest you get rid of the left side menu. the top menu looks nice enough.

You've got a good green color design going on here, but does that really represent the town you are making the website for? It's not much of a critical question, but one to ask yourself, since the website is based around the town of 40,000 with 75% over the age of 50. Most older people don't really go for the bold colors such as that green all over the site.

Other than that, I think you utilized css well with the links going down the left side of the page for navigation. I am using Firefox ( :xf.love: ) and the borders of the buttons are coming out into the main section (white) on the center of the page, maybe 20-25 pixels at the most.

I think you've got a great concept going here, and I have registered names for my town. Except my town has 3,000 people in it, most aged within 35-50.

Best of luck with the website

-Steve
