i regged three domains about 24 hrs ago and they are still not "active". under status in my godaddy account it says "pending update". i was charged for them and they're still showing up as parked at godaddy. They are my first .de's - does the tld have anything to do with the wait time? all my other domains seemed to go active almost instantly

Michael, not sure but I believe it is probably related to the .de registration. Is .de restricted to German registrants (physical address required?). I would send a customer service request to GD if not active by tomorrow.

thanks for your response - i did think about that, considering i'm from the U.S. - hopefully its not a problem, cause I really want these names!

well i just did a test to try and register an .eu (which i know you must be a citizen of the EU in order to do) and it wouldnt let me go through. so since they let me go through with the .de , i guess there is another problem!

Godaddy - quoted from here:

New domains and changes to domains may take up to 4-8 hours for .COM and .NET domains and about 24-48 hours for all other domain extensions to become effective. This is due to the number of networks involved, and the fact that several different agencies control those networks. This delay applies to all domains and all registrars.

Please allow for this delay when planning Web sites or configuring a domain to work with your email.

Albeit, this is not really true of all registers :D

DENIC (.de registry authority) - quoted from here:

§ 3 Duties of the Domain Holder

(1) ) In submitting the application for registration of a domain, the Domain Holder shall give an assurance that the data pertaining to him/her contained therein is correct and that he/she is entitled to register and/or use the domain and, in particular, that the registration and intended use of the domain does not infringe anybody else’s rights nor break any law. If the Domain Holder is not domiciled in Germany, he/she shall be required to appoint an Administrative Contact domiciled in Germany. This Administrative Contact shall also be the Domain Holder’s authorized representative for receiving the service of official or court documents for the purposes of §§ 174 ff. of the German Code of Civil Procedure.

Could be becuase of either. I assume DENIC not allowing registration due to you not being in Germany, and Godaddy not being fast to tell you and refund your money. Like Carlton said, contact Customer Service.

have you heard anything about your .de?
I'm curious as I bought a .de from my registrar and they took the purchase
then awhile later refunded my money telling me the .de
server was not working and the domain I wanted was actually gone...
yet it still shows as available... are .de's on an update system?

This happens often with country-code TLD's, especially when registred using registrars in countries that are not that of the ccTLD in question. An example would be GoDaddy here. They are not DENIC accredited registrar for the .de extention (list of those who are: by name-order or by country). Basically they resell for one of these (more than likely for Register.com for .de's). This causes the problems when they believe x+y=0, when infact x+y=1. What do I mean? Godaddy (example here, not that this is what happened to your name Michael, but what mis_chiff is referring to), sends a signal to the .de registrar it gets names from, who in turn sends one to the DENIC registry itself. It basically ask "Is this name found in your records?". Stupid coding (actually failing to check more than once in the effort to save bandwidth and serverload, or the failure to assume it is taken if get no answer back due to system failures), makes Godaddy see the name as free, when infact it may not be at all. It is like you doing a whois on a newly registered domain..May show as availible, but is not, simply becuase the whois can't find a record it is miscoded to show it as unregged.

Michael: Still should be of interest to us all what happens next, and what reply you get back from GoDaddy. Do let us know, please. Best of luck :tu:
