Ugh! Gas is now over $4.20 where I live! Everyone is trying to sell their big gas guzzlers, and I'm here stuck with a 16MPG van! :'(

What's it like where you live? I know in EU it's been this way for awhile - but you have adjusted with better cars...while US is stuck.

Thought you guys might enjoy this,

1 Gallon = 3.785 litres

we are paying $1.60 a ltr here in Australia, so if my Math is right, that would a little over $6 per Gallon your way.

It's ugly all the way around at the moment.

Talk here of it reaching $1.80 - $2 in the upcoming months.

so much for the all the increasing.

Today Asia Seeing increasing Fuel price with malaysia removing their subsidies, leading to an increase cost of fuel of up to 40% over the original price.

Hybrid cars ?? or perhaps let's stop building more cars.
Coming Soon : Recycle-A-Car

maybe this demands for fuel will push for a innovation in teleporting, which eliminate the need for cars

Cool! I didn't know this, probably because Avalanches are all out of my price range :lala:

This technology is known as Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) and is also used by foreign car companies, such as Honda and I believe Toyota. :tu:

There are two types of gallon:

Gallon (US)= 3.785 liters
Gallon ((British Imperial) = 4.546 liters

Confusing ain't it? Why not change to litres like the rest of the world.

Asian countries that were subsidizing fuel like India, Indonesia and Malasia were forced to increase prices. China will probably have to do the same but probably only after the Olympics to avoid riots during the games

Whatever way you look at it, the situation is bad, except for the oil producers. They're just lovin it!

The gallon is scarcely used anymore in the UK, all pump prices and readouts are in litres therefore I think it is only the US and possibly Canada using gallons.

It is used as a sort of backwards reference and makes good tabloid headlines

£6.50 per gallon sounds a lot worse than £1.43 per litre

Beer is still in pints though. :hehe:

I don't know about the rest of the world but the U.S. problem is simple and I will do it in numbered points:

1. The real estate industry inflated the price of houses
2. The mortgage industry allowed people, who never should have qualified for a mortgage, to qualify by skewing the asset/debt ratio by utilizing very low adjustable rate mortgages.
3. Wall Street wanted another security to sell because derivatives were played out.
4. The mortgage industry bundled up their paper and sold it to Wall Street.
5. When brokerage houses saw the outstanding numbers that would be avaialble in 2-3 years when these mortgages reset...they got even more greedy if there is such a superfluous term. Instead of keeping 20% and selling the rest to portfolio managers and pension funds, they kept nearly 70%.
7. It all went kaboom.
8. Our government has a system of checks and balances, so they could not establish the 200 billion dollar rescue of Wall Street over night.
9. CitiGroup, Merrill-Lynch et all ran to the Mddle East for money. Abu Dhaby propped up Citi with 8.5 billion buy in and Merrill was selling ownership like mad.
10. The U.S. government, thankful for the bail out before they could conceivably act, has allowed the quid pro quo to be: " Thanks for rescuing our hallowed financial instituions. Now, you can work our people over on the price of gas. "

The thing I think a lot of people are forgetting is that the Middle Eastern countries don't want extremely high gas prices. Before you immediately comment, think about this...

The more expensive gas becomes, the more people that will be negatively affected (obviously). When gas becomes so expensive that it hurts almost everyone drastically, governments, corporations, and other organizations will be forced to invest in alternative fuel methods.

In the short run, high prices are great for OPEC. However many Middle Eastern countries, such as Saudi Arabia, are starting to realize that their long-term earnings will drop dramatically if high prices force countries to invest in alternative fuel.

Although it sounds odd, OPEC and other oil cartels would ideally like prices lower than what they are now. As long as they continue to make money but keep the price low enough to pacify consumers, the status quo will be maintained and ideally there would be no impetus to invest in other energy.

Short Version: High gas prices will spur investment in alternative energy and seal the fate of oil cartels.

Totally true for those oil producing countries that think long term; those with short term thinking governments just want more money now. Maybe countries like the US should think in long terms too.

Wasn't the iPhone 2.0 supposed to solve our fuel cost problems? :)

Tune into Bill O'Reily, he's talking about this stuff today.

Try Finland, gas prices are ~1.561 €/litre where I live. A scarcely populated country + one of the highest gas prices on earth = sucks a**.
