FreePorn Sells for $4 million

The sale of FreePorn. com marks one of the largest two-word domain name sales in history and is the largest domain transaction of 2008, to date. The site was launched in 1996 and has consistently been one of the largest portals of free, adult entertainment on the Web. The site has continually gown in page and traffic rank according to Alexa.

"A marketable domain name is crucial to the success of any online adult entertainment business, perhaps more so than in any other industry," said Monte Cahn, co-founder and President of Moniker. "FreePorn. com is generic in nature, helping its new owner benefit from direct navigation and general in- bound inquires directed at the site daily."

Let us remain realistic: As always, it is not the domain that made the value, but the ROI of the business. FreePorn.com is neither short, neither one-word. The SERP is indeed often in the top 10 of several search engines upon a search for "free porn", but that has to do with web content (keyword search and keyword presence) and nothing with the domain itself.
The purchasers surely know more than we do. The only truly criteria to evaluate a domain are SERP and returning visitors if they do add value by purchasing anything directly from the web site or by advertising etc.

Also, any and all domains are marketable.
What is the value of, by example, tdnam.com? Not very short, not dictionary, no popular meaning, and by probably all appraisers worth not much more than reg fee.
But look: tdnam.com is ... TheDomainNameAfterMarket.com is ... Godaddy.com.

This is one of the millions of examples on how wrong most people think about domains and domain value: They mix up domain elements (characters & combinations, meaning, SERP) with web elements (text, keywords, links, traffic) and absolutely personal subjective elements (such as language, catchyness, popularity in a target group etc.).

I say: Good buy, but not for the reasons that most people think.
If the domain is worth $4 million, how much is it for the business?

no - this was actually more of a domain sale rather than the business in this case.

I think it is definetely more a business sale. Even if the content will change, the name has enormous traffic thants to current business.

A good domain name, is probably worth the present value of the total marketing/advertising costs, that a company would save, by having that name vs. and alternative name, over the life of the website. Of course, it would be an estimate and it is all in the eyes in owner. But suffice to say, for an adult site, freeporn is with a lot in marketing/advertising dollars, vs. a name such as wxyz, for serveral reason.

My guess is that $4 million is a good value for the company and the return should be excellent, if the site's net profit is more than $600,000/year. I would guess it is, with the right content. :)

I seem to remember Mr Schwartz saying he was pulling in 1 Mil a year from porno.com ( which is basically parked ).

I'd expect that freeporn.com could easily make twice as much every year, simply parked?

This was a domain sale with a little bit of business thrown in.

I know, the previous owners mother actually was the one who got me into the internet game back in 98. She told me he was making thousands a week off that name back then, so that is what motivated me to get started.

Yes, whoever owns the primary domain would surely be able to estimate what type of net profit that one can received from FreePorn. What's more, the underlying asset, i.e., the name, is also appreciating over time, as traffic and revenue grow. In other words, it was a great purchase by the right end-user.

Porn traffic doesn't pay that well, so the traffic numbers will have to be pretty large.

Also, Porn company purchases aren't paid at the typical multiple. Regular traffic will get you anywhere from 8-12 yrs. (usually 8-10) But pron pays way less...like 4-6 times rev.

Not too surprising, traffic for adult sites is great. :) From what I can tell, 40% of the organic traffic that I get, are from visitors who are looking for porn. I hate to disappoint. :'(

If you mean by parking adult names, then yes, adult traffic is horrible.

The money in adult is selling memberships and conversion ratios.

Webcams.com was sold by Moniker in the previous auction. The moral of the story is adult oriented stuff still pays. :)
