I don't get it. It's just a random made-up word? What kind of website would you develop on this?

Yes its a made up word. A mash up of fantastic and amazing according to urban dictionary

So why would someone buy this? Especially seeing as how similar, shorter names...such as fanaze.com are freely available to hand register?

I do not feel any value there..it can also bring negative connotations - for example, some people can see string "nazi" in the name, while string "fana" can be also interpreted as beginning of words "fanatics"..personally I do not like it.
