Nearly all I hear about Network Solutions is bad and obviously they are not helping themselves. Some intelligent marketing and PR is desperately needed.

At those prices their margins are huge.

I know people who had someone register their domain(s) years ago and they just keep renewing. $35 is such small change for even a small business that it is much easier to renew where you already are. Going somewhere else would require research, study and risk. Much easier to just pay the NS price. Much cheaper to renew in the same place than to hire someone to move you elsewhere.

I imagine NS can tell you to the penny how much extra profit is generated by keeping their legacy pricing.

Fully agree with @mhdoc - many people with one or two names are just fine with paying more to not have to change.
