I posted an answer from RJ in another thread, so here it is again:

At peak hours we're having memory issues on occasion. If this happens, post a nearly blank thread, then edit the post to include the full information.

I've seen this error myself from the search function. If you do get it when searching, try to put more or different keywords in your query. If there are far too many results for a query it runs out of memory.

Example search: domain (not enough memory because there are xxx,xxx results)
Example search: .com domain (works fine)

I'm doing my best to find a solution to these memory issues. It seems to be a common problem with vBulletin and I see a few additional suggestions to try there.

Maybe vBulletin is not as good as it says it is on the tin...

I just tried searching "domain". Got the expected error.

Why not add "domain" as a popular keyword and ask the user to define a deeper query?

That would work, but to be useful I would need a list of all the search queries that cause the site search function to error, and that information isn't obvious to me. I just gave 'domain' as an example, I doubt that one is actually searched very often. :)
