Enforcing Copyright

I've been meaning to do something about people infringing my copyright for a while, but was never really sure (a) how difficult it would be, or (b) how likely it was that I'd be successful.

Today, I decided to give it a go. I sent cease and desist letters to three of the most blatant offenders. One is a US student essay site, another is an Indian informational portal, and the third is an individual trying to pass himself off as an expert using my content.

What do you think the chances are that they'll take the content down at the first time of asking?

Fifty fifty.

Some do, some won't. What happens next is how far you're willing to go.

C&D's are usually more effective with the good 'ol legal letterhead, and your effective protection of any Copyright (almost always) requires registration in the US, if that is where you are located.
Chances of success? Depends on your letter. Post and we'll critique for fun ;)

Okay, "cease and desist letters" makes it sound like I've gone the formal route; I haven't yet. I sent a simple, short e-mail describing their infringement and requesting that they remove the offending content immediately. If that doesn't work, I plan on filing a DMCA complaint with Google. Incidentally, all three sites are running AdSense on my content; I'm hoping that will make the owners eager to avoid a fuss.

Update: I've had a 2/3 hit rate. Time to file a DMCA request for the third.

Does anyone know whether that might jeopardise their AdSense account as well as their rankings?

Actually, sending that email IS a C+D. A C+D is simply a request stop and remove alleged illegal activity. so you tell them of infringemtnet, you tell tehm to remove it.. my friend, that is a successful C+D sent.

The third site has now removed the offending content too: that's 3/3. Much better, and much easier, than I expected.
