Okay, I'm trying to be hip so I'm surfing the net more often, and I keep seeing these dot US domain name dealies. Now I don't mean to seem naive, but exactly what is the purpose of these?

Dot com, net and org I can understand - we've all heard of them. And the lesser ones, stuff like dot biz and dot info are pretty self-explanatory. But my question is everytime you land on a dot us site, do you really need to be reminded what country you're in?

Is this an ego boost we just can't do without? I mean isn't it enough that we already know that the US stands far above all other countries in the field of fat couch potatoes sitting for endless hours behind computer screens?

Or maybe I'm way off base here, and it really stands for "us" as in every country in the world living together in equality on the internet? Okay, I know - I'm not holding my breath on that one, either!

Or could it be just a big plot by US Magazine to get more subscriptions? Yes, we could be the unwitting victims of an evil cartel of very greedy publishers!

You didn't think about any of this before you pressed those keys to buy up every domain you saw, did you? Well, that's what you've got ME for. I'm a comic with lots of time on my hands, while you're too busy every day working at REAL jobs to bother figuring out really important things like this!

Hundreds of other countries in the world have their own extension too. Just that with the internet most prevalent in the US, the .us extension is one of the most prevalent ccTLDs.
