Has Donuts Registry started taking back some TLDs that were not registered yet? I noticed a few days ago there was a good .center domain that was available, and now a few days later, it is been "taken" with the Whois stating "This name is reserved by the Registry in accordance with ICANN Policy".

Seriously, you could always ask them. I think "This name is reserved by the Registry... " could be interpreted in any way the registry wanted. My feeling is if they reserve too many good names then people won't bother with them.

ICANN policy reservations are quite different to the registry taking back domains for their own purposes. It basically means that the domains should not have been offered for registration at all.

can these guys just make any domain reserved at any time? if so, that is pretty bad news for domainers. new trend comes around, bam... keyword reserved.

ICANN reserved strings may not be offered by registries. Registries themselves are allowed to reserve max 100 domains. Registries are allowed to tag certain domains as premium with a base pricetag for which registrars can offer them.

I get that but registries are "tagging" 1000's of domains per tld and I was just wondering if they only get one shot at tagging domains as premium or if they can take a domain that was previously available to register and make it 'premium' if they feel it becomes valuable for whartever reason.

Yes, i believe that is possible as long as the domain is not owned already. But in general most premiums are already set out.

it would seem the new gtlds are a bad investment in general for domains when this kind of thing can happen. new ideas, new trends, new words all at the mercy of the ever hungry registry gobbling them up.

It's the same as what others have done way before the new gTLDs :)

such as? there has never been such erratic pricing and initiatives to knock domainers out of making a profit.
