This is a really important issue that doesn't get enough attention. The circular dependency you've described serverHold blocking DNS, DNS required to verify for appeal is a genuine structural failure.


One thing worth adding: Google Safe Browsing is just one layer of the security reputation problem for domain registrants. VirusTotal aggregates 70+ antivirus and security engines independently of GSB, and a domain can be flagged on multiple engines simultaneously, each with its own delisting process. The more engines that flag a domain, the harder recovery becomes and unlike GSB, there's no centralized appeal mechanism at all.


The deeper issue for domain investors and registrants is that security reputation now operates on a completely separate track from SEO reputation. A domain can have clean backlinks, solid DA, and years of legitimate history on Archive.org and still be flagged across security databases for activity that happened under a previous owner. These flags don't appear in Ahrefs or Majestic. They're invisible until something breaks.


The industry hasn't caught up to this reality yet.

Fair question. I built a tool called Dom-Verify that automates domain security checks VirusTotal, Wayback Machine, WHOIS, Moz, and a few others into a single score.


VirusTotal comes up in my posts because it's the check most investors skip, and it's the one that has surprised me most consistently. About 15% of expired domains I've analyzed had at least one security flag including names with clean backlink profiles.

That's fair feedback. I've been sharing the VirusTotal angle because it's a gap I've seen consistently in due diligence discussions here not to promote the tool, but because it's the thing I've researched most. I'll be more mindful about how I frame it.
