This is somewhat disturbing to me.

We have so few female domainers! Domaining is suddenly looking like one big, boring sausage fest. We need more females in this business, period. Whats the fun in doing anything if there are no chicks around to hit on?

On a serious note, why is domaining somewhat a primarily male field? What is it about domaining that doesn't attract women? Its not manual labor, so I can't see why women wouldn't be attracted to domaining.

To the female domainers here. What attracts you to domaining (and domainers :)) and why do you think more of your kind aren't present in this field?

Just an observation...

If females here (and other internet forums) wanted to be treated equally and "taken seriously" (on forums majority male), why identify yourself as female in the choice of female-sounding alias - virtually always something unimaginative: "Hot Girl", "Sexy Sue", "Miss XYZ", "Domainer Girl" etc. with a face/body avatar pic.
Don't usually get males calling themselves "Domainer Hunk" etc...

If females truly want equal treatment/no bias they could simply use a sexless sounding name - and no-one would be any the wiser.
"On the internet unless you mention it, no-one knows you are a dog".

Then again, MOST women are biologically hardwired to define themselves by their 'attractiveness' in the physical - and virtual world. Hence the choice of alias.

What someone's name is should be of NO consequence to anybody. Thats just another aspect of discrimination. Why should a name bother you? Its a free country right? I can decide to name myself Mr. Dick, Mr. Hunk, Mr. Xyz. It is my decision, and as long as I don't offend anybody intentionally (and I don't suppose any grown up adult would be offended).

And the comment that MOST women are biologically hardwired to define themselves by their 'attractiveness' - well, do you have any stats for that? Thats like saying that most men are biologically hardwired to define themselves by their pen*s size.

Truth is, domainers are still made of half ex-pornographers and nerds, people who have no clue how to treat a real woman, simple cause they've never had one of their own.

Btw, I had someone ask me if I'm male or female :hehe:
Perhaps thats because of my ambiguous forum name (can't help that. Had that nickname for as long as I can remember). I'm male, 20, committed to a woman I might soon marry.

P.S.: This is from another thread, but check out this scammer dude here: www.adamfelds.com.
I don't suppose nerds like him are an exception in the domaining industry.

There is some excellent discussion in this thread outside of a few short posts that were ignorant and insulting to women which I have removed. Any more like that are going to earn warning points for trolling. Let's keep the rude comments out of this discussion please.

No - those are not my views.

1/ However, regarding having a female sounding alias, what "should be" and "what is" are two completely different things.
It is a given ("what is") - as Raidergirl and the earlier forum operator can attest - that (not a few) male members will GUARANTEED harrass females, make propositions etc.

2/ Still, the open ended QN remains: why MOST males on forums (eg domain forums and other types) do NOT feel compelled to have an alias with a clue to their sex - whereas A LOT of females do, spelling it out (_Girl, _Gurl, Miss_, Hot_, Sexy_)...
Emphasis is A LOT. Coincidence...?
Just an observation, not looking for answers, just something to mull over...

3/ Put simply, IF it significantly affected Raider Girl (and clearly it DOES otherwise she wouldn't be shouting from the rooftops) the practical solution is:
Deal with it or have a sexless alias. see (1): "Should be" v "What is".
Alas, (certain) other peoples attitudes are not going to change..
A confident, strong person wouldn't care about a few random anonymous internet keyboard warriors. Water off a duck's back.

4/ Complaining is useless if there is no practical solution.
Sex discrimination happens in the workplace but there are rules/regulations and recourse - on the internet there is none.

5/ Of course, as in all internet debates, the odd poster will come out spouting the PC line (why even bother?) - but it doesn't change the fact or disprove the general statement:
"Generally, MOST Domainers (and internet forum posters?) are introverted, nerdy, geeky men." MOST.
Why do some people take it personally (does the shoe fit?) and feel they have to post and mention that they are one of the exceptions?
Just as finding the odd black sheep does NOT disprove/invalidate the statememt "MOST sheep are white". MOST.

6/ Male domainers/forum posters.
The forum post count (pro-rata daily) doesn't lie and OFTEN will reveal a lot...
If you are the exception, again, save the post 'cos we don't want to know about how extrovert etc you are even though an analysis of post count times would reveal you are at the PC 24/7/365, 8am-12pm, haven't left the PC for more than 15 minutes and can't possibly go out... ;)

Cheers

I believe all of your points/questions can be answered. PM me if you want to continue this debate. But since I don't see even the women here responding, I feel its a lost cause to write another lengthy reply.

There's no reason to be reactionary or to get all worked up over nothing, but
your first question about being "harrassed" because of ones femaleness? The flirtatious PM's in this context are usually very innocent, and most get the hint quickly. When it has happened to me, it's only when there is a "photo" that actualizes and makes it more real for someone else, is there a proposal. Raidergirl had that happen to her when she had a photo, but noted it stopped when she had a cartoon. Speaking as a woman, I have been much more offended by sexist comments and deragatory remarks then, "your cute...will you marry me?"

Your second point, the name. I believe it's been answered. A neutral name or even feminine sounding name can be a man. It's less likely my avatar
is a guys but I choose to use it becuase its one of my company names, and
I think of it more as branding. If its more obvious I am a female, I have nothing to hide. Often a name that dosent have "girl" in it may suggest a male name such as "aggro" the etymological origins point to aggression, a more masculine trait. I 'm much more interested in the individual with whom I'm conversing, doing business, then the fact they are male or female.

Some of these issues are no big deal on this board. Only three times have I blocked someone and that's becuase they were rude, aggressive, looking for a fight, misogynistic, never becuase they were flirting in cyber space.
