Domain Sales Letter Faux Pas

Here's one!

Let's say you own the singular .com of a 2 word keyphrase and send a sales letter to the owner of the plural .com. Aside from referencing an Estibot valuation, Adwords Keyword Tool Broad match statistics and a price that's more than twice what similar names have sold for in the last several years, this letter contains the following line:

Owning this name can help you to rank higher in search engines for the term,

However, you failed to realize that the recipient has a developed site which is already #1 ... for both the singular AND the plural. In fact, it occupies both #1 and #2 spots for the singular - er, that's the one you're trying to sell.

Oops! :D :D

Tempted to write back and innocently ask how their domain can put me higher than #1...

Hah! Good idea! But the site does well for me - I'm in no hurry to get rid of it. (Though I guess for the right price :D ...)

Moral of the story: If you want would-be buyers to take you seriously, do a little homework!
