Does adding directory to website increase ranking

Does adding directory to website increase ranking, and is it worth doing it.

For exmaple having loan site www.example.com and adding directory here www.example.com/directory.
and in the directory only having finace realte site to it.
So basically only adding website that is related your your niche

Ive been thinking of doing this too but since all the links would be reciprocal Im not sure how effective it would be.
