So, today I received two letters from this company called ICLS.NET.
Upon opening them, I noticed that they weren't actually letters, but bills. They had
a) description of services they had rendered and the charge for them
b) a customer number for me
c) a domain name of mine
d) a detach section with the bill amount listed, where i write the amount
e) instructions on who i have to write the check to, and when it was due

i thought "what the hell? i've never even heard of these people, let alone gotten any services from them...wonder why i owe them money???". Then, I noticed, that in nice unobtrusive print it said "this is not a bill, this is a solicitation"

This is the biggest bullshit in the world - it's companies like these that yearly rip senior citizens off of millions of dollars. My 94 year old grandfather, before he died, got several of forms like these from health care companies - they looked exactly like bills and seemed like they probably were....well of course they were not. But he couldn't see well, he was old, he just wrote off a check and sent it to them.

I think this practice is awful. I didn't know it had permeated the domain world, but it's just irresponsible and unethical. I strongly encourage NO one to do domain business with a company that subscribes to such practices. Boo, ICLS.NET.

Cheers.
John

Man, that's harsh.. Will keep that website in mind. Isn't this somewhat illegal, though? I mean, there should be something we can do about this.

Agreed, it is disgusting practice that only intends to mislead people into paying for something they don't want.

You've probably heard of 'Domain Registry of America'. They've also made a fortune from sending out transfer soliciations that look like domain renewal notices.

The practice isn't limited to domain names. Anytime I register a trademark with the US Trademark Office, there are always solicitations that look like bills for 'Trademark Protection Services' and what not.

Take a look at their website..
$37.50 for an automatic submission to different SEs, and a quarterly report???
You could in worst case get banned from most of the SEs by using their "services"..
Most searchengines have strict police against automatic submission robots..
Scam, scam and scam with spam... >:(

Yes!

I received 2 letters from them about my domains, how they would expire and how I should send them $xx to keep the domains, or something similar.

Binned both the letters, but for somebody older or not as aware, it did look very professional.
