i dont know if this goes here but if an admin/mod would like to move to its appropriate spot then go ahead.

anyways since my school is blocking practically every website even ones that we may need to use i am getting tired of searching for new proxy sites EVERYU day. so my question is, can i create (if so how) my own proxy at home (i have dsl so the internet connection is no problem. its always on) and then somehow do what it is called so i can view the site at school? sorry im not being very descripted but im new to proxies and such. well, thanx in advance.

The computer always has to be on.

First of all, install XAMPP for windows.
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html
Then download phpproxy and extract it to your htdocs directory (usually c:/program files/xampp/htdocs/).

Go to ipchicken.com on your home PC and write down the IP you see.

At school, type that IP into the address and hit go. You SHOULD be able to see your proxy and browse using it. If not you may need to do some port forwarding..

wow home computer can be quite difficult.

You'll have to:

1)Check your router settings route all requests on port 80 to your computer's internal ip. Also make sure your firewall accepts port 80 connections
2)Setup Xampp as posted above
3)Install PHPProxy
4)Get your ip and test connecting on port 80

I myself cannot get it to work with my router, but if you're on a normal adsl modem it shouldn't be too hard. I reccomend you find a webhost, for $3 or whatever it costs its certainly worth it. I run the phpproxy script on my personal site as can be seen below in my sig.

Not many hosts allow proxies for $3 :p if you know any, can you shoot me a PM?

Fallen, they can block the IP, but if you have a dynamic IP (which means you have a different IP everytime you connect to the internet) then just restart the router and find your new IP :)

anyone have any other method of creating a proxy server from home?

The solution posted by tm is basically a webserver with a PHP application which is rather a proxy service than a proxy server.

Alternatively you could set up a real proxy server. The easiest way to do this would be probably to set up Apache with the mod_proxy module. This might be a bit more difficult to configure, but it far more versatile than a webbased proxy service.

What you should ensure any how, is to restrict the access as otherwise anybody could access your proxy service/server.

Any cheap host will do if it is just for yourself I would've thought. Maybe even free.

True but i think i am right in thinking that he wants to use this at school and as a student myself it is often hard if not impossible to setup the browser to use a proxy server. Its much much easier to just use a simple web proxy.

I wouldn't mind setting him/her up one and hosting it, as i said earlier, depending on bandwidth for maybe $3 a month.

PM Me if you're still reading this thread Fallen and willing to pay that small amount, should be no problem setting it up.

*I'm not intentionally trying to advertise here, please delete if it's inappropriate*
my new proxy site www.exam.uni.cc is designed specifically to get around this problem, as at my school most proxies are blocked because they contain the word "proxy" in the url, which automatically triggers for it to be blocked, so an alternative to your problem would be to go onto the site mentioned above, as it has no specific reason for it to be suspicious

Just to addon, free hosting will be sufficient for a web proxy service.

These services are disliked by hosts only because of the resources taken up.

Secure it well, share it between 1 or 2 people, and your host will probably never know/care.

Well I'm at school and your site is blocked :P

I'm considering doing the same at my home, so I'll try some of these things. Thanks.

Ah, sorry :-/ This was kind of old. My bad. I just found it on search... at school... was a little pressed for time.

To put this thread finally to rest, exam.uni.cc will work if they filter the word proxy, but if a school/uni or whatever catches you on it they're gonna block it anyways no matter what the name, even if you try to disguise the site name or content if they catch you on it then that domain is doomed :) Most places like that dont ban on ip thank god.. but some do and you would have to get a new IP to mirror that proxy.
