Creating dynamic content using layers

Hi I hope someone here can help me, I'm trying to design a page that takes data in from a database and lay's it out in an almost tabular format. the data comes in the format of a picture followed by a variable amount of text, I'm looking to leave it that the web page is printable, so I need to have as little free space as possible. have to cut down on prinitng costs.

I have made a small example of what I am hoping to do

I'm wondering is there a way to dynamically calculate the width and height or (right and bottom position) of dynamically created tables or layers
