Well if you go the GPL way

the most used CMS is PHPnuke, but mambo is catching up fast too , but these are very heavy. I like Drupal as it`s light and can be used as blog too.
If you take blogs in CMS category the best is Wordpress it Rocks !

Content Management Systems are for the lazy people, not many webmasters really use them ;)

Actually, it all depends on who the webmaster is. If the webmaster is the person who created the site, then, obviously, they have the program (likely Dreamweaver) and so they'll edit it via that, oftentimes its quicker anyway.

However, if the webmaster is the person who ordered site creation from an outside firm, then they will not be the person who created the site but could be the person assigned to manage the site (hence, the webmaster). In that case, since they don't have the program that made the site, they will use a CMS.

I am about to start coding my own CMS with PHP and MySQL soon. I think it allows for complete customization to suit my firm and I can also learn from the experience!

Will.

Sometimes a website can be too complex that it would just be too hard and painstaking to edit it manually. A lot of webmasters would use CMS if they knew how to customise it to their liking. A lot of webmasters would love to use a CMS, but they can't find the right features that they are looking for. If a website is made from a design company, a lot of times a CMS will be designed for them to update their site with ease. I want to use a CMS not because I'm lazy, but because it's much easier and faster. And it keeps things well organized.

I'm actually thinking of going with PHPCow.com and go with the downloaded version. Either that, or find some kid to make one to fit my site for much less. I don't know ;)

Veolus - i disagree. when you have a site with 10 pages you dont need a CMS but when you have a site with over 50 pages... you may want to use one. Easy to update.

eBuzzz - phpcow seams nice.. i'll give it a try.

Thank you all for your input :)

Cheers,

I build my own content managment systems, and i swear by them........ Of course it can be just as easy to edit through dreamweaver, but why waste time writing html when a script can do it for you. I also use an auto cropper to make uploading images allot easier. So actually having a cms can save a huge amount of time, which we all know is important in this buisness.

I agree with this, Wordpress can be used as a CMS, expecially now with the addition of "Pages" makes it very easy to add more pages that will take on the same look and feel. Right now though you will have to make a few changes to have your added pages added to the onsite search build into WordPress, though in future releases this should be there by default.

Brian

ive found for just a simple site http://cutephp.com is great, small and simple installation and easy to use, allows uploading of images and allows different news categorys which is great for splitting content across pages of your site.

I used it a little but in my opinion it's not so great.

Still looking to hear some opinions about TextPattern :)

I still say building your own cms is better than downloading one. Its really not that hard if you know any php at all. oh, and its allot more secure. with some simple if statements you can allow only admins to add/edit/delete certain content. this comes in handy if you have several people working on a site. bob(admin) who is in control of user management, jobob(reg user) in control of site content. you dont want jobob going in and accidently deleting bob or even more serious deleting all users. Basicly a cms can allow multiple people to work on a site, but they only have the rights to do what you want them to.

Ever so wrong. I always use a CMS, but I have coded my own CMS for it. It is also freely available (of course the version I use I've customized to my needs):

http://www.lowter.com/p/ottoman

It doesn't render too much content itself, and you *have* to know HTML to use it. It is made for web masters, not idiots :D

I don't like the GPL license, it just doesn't specify exactly what it should. Which is one reason why Ottoman (the CMS I coded) is licensed under the Academic Free License (AFL).
