I believe only short and easy-to-remember domain names are sustainable, regardless of where in the world you live and which cultural background you come from.

Now that the Chinese domain market has become a hot topic, I myself want to understand this trend too. Is there any real meaning behind each domain name sold in China? Here, I'd like to share with you what I've found as I read the Chinese news everyday.

GZX.com
GZX can stand for 更自信 (even more self-confident) which can be used in many fields such as education, self-help, and even consumer products to raise your self image.

XLY.com
XLY can stand for 夏令营 (summer camp) or 新领域 (new field) which can be used in recreation and high-tech products.

Sold in just 4 days!

476.com has been sold for a 7-figure number in RMB. Both buyer and seller are Chinese.

Domain investor Big V (nickname) bought the domain name and then sold it within only 4 days. He said he did not want to sell it because names ending with 6, 8, or 9 are relatively better names where big jump in price can be expected very soon.

Buyer approached seller directly for a private sale and seller made a 6-figure profit in this quick deal.

3N domain names are considered "hard currency" in China, all commanding more than 1m RMB. Names not beginning with 0 or 4 have stable prices of 2m+. For example, 536.com was said to have sold for close to 3m RMB.

Following the 1m RMB sale of 1.cm, a new record has been set by the purchase of 7.cm by a Chinese buyer for 1.28m RMB, making it the most expensive .cm domain name.

Even though .cm is not a mainstream extension, it can take advantage of consumers mis-typing the .com or .cn extension to obtain traffic.

What about something like 14 - 16 dot com, 14-15 dot com, 12-13 dot com? What are the meanings and is there prospect in those names in China?

One of my domains 889895.com gets so much spam every day from China with offers and a lot more than my other numeric domains. Does this have any specific meaning and why it's getting more specific offers?

Thanks

Which pattern is better from a Chinese perspective: ABCA or ABAC or ABCB?

Or are all three about the same?

At the Techcrunch Beijing conference held recently, Google's Eric Schmidt talked about where he found innovation coming from. There are five cities he mentioned, and they are:

1. Silicon Valley
2. Boston
3. Tel Aviv
4. Beijing
5. Shanghai

Note that China occupies two of the top five spots. How is it going to affect the demand for domain names in China? Food for thought.

@TradeMeDomains.com When you split 889895 into three units (88, 98, 95) and say them in either Mandarin or Cantonese, it's still smooth and easy to remember. Good name. I like it.

In Mandarin:
88 发发 (make a fortune x2)
98 久发 (make a fortune, for ever)
95 酒网 (wine website)

For a wine ecommence site that prospers?

Could you sell a doman name to China with the following features?

1. Begins with 0.
2. Ends with 4
2. .cc extension

Someone did. 0814.CC was sold for 3,100 RMB in an auction on 4.cn that ended on Nov 12. Possible reason for this sale? 0814 is a telephone area code.

Can you settle the "4" and "0" issues once and for all? I think everyone knows and accepts that a 4 or a 0 by themselves is bad.

But with the 4, as I understand it, when proceeded by an 8 or a 5, it becomes acceptable. Here are a few quotes I collected from various online resources:

  1. Other numbers that are considered to be lucky are 8, 17, 28, 38, 48, 54, 68, 80, 84, 88, 99, 168 & 108.
  2. 84 sounds the same as “forever prosperous”.
  3. 4 is considered auspicious when it is used with the 5 or number 8. 54 means “shall live forever and will not die”
  4. In Feng Shui this is a very positive number for business meaning “very prosperous forever”.
  5. 48—This is a Feng Shui lucky number meaning “sure to prosper”.
  6. 54—In Feng Shui this is “shall live forever and will not die”. This is a lucky number.
  7. 314—A universally lucky number, pi, it is considered a magical number since it’s digits go out to infinity.
  8. The only time 4 is considered auspicious is when it is used with a 5 or an 8
  9. 54 sounds the same as “shall live forever and will not die”
  10. Forty-eight sounds the same as “sure to prosper”
  11. 84 sounds the same as “forever prosperous” and hence they are acceptable to the Chinese.
  12. 54 means "no death"
For the 0, it also appears to be less desirable, but there are exceptions. Again a few quotes from online sources:

  1. 0 is perfection, nothing, harmony and completion.
  2. 100—In Feng Shui it means longevity.
  3. 0: Zero is basically our neutral number. We don’t like or dislike it. That is, we don’t mind whether or not we get numbers like these.
  4. 5201314 五二零一三一四 / 我爱你一生一世 I love you for a lifetime
  5. 520, means I love you(我爱你)
  6. The numbers 0, 6, 8, and 9 are believed to have auspicious meanings because their names sound similar to words that have positive meanings.
Are these all just BS, its confusing. Honestly, in my reading I would have expected 7 to be much less desirable than a 0.
@ChinaMobi Any opinion on this?

I would go with ABAC, flowed by ABCB

Recently a man called Jia Wei QU bought 40,000 of .pw, several thousands of 4L.cc, over a thousand of 5L.com, 6,000 of .in, and 10,000 of .co domain names. The domain names include 222.co, 333.co, 444.co, and 7777.co. He owns about 100,000 domain names and feels the new gTLDs offer better returns. For example, he bought 111.sex and 222.sex. He said that he could not afford 111.com. Even if he could, the return would be less than that of 111.co or 111.sex. He does own some .com, such as YingGuo.com(英国, UK). He has invested in domain name for more than one year.(CM: Emphasis mine)

@ChinaMobi Any opinion on this?
I like 0 and 4 as long as they make sense within the context of the domain name. See the story on 0814 I mentioned earlier. Both 0 and 4 rhyme with many Chinese characters so sometimes they do make sense.

68.cn changed hands several times in the past year. The numbers 6(乐) and 8(发) indicate good luck. 6 can mean "smooth" and "happy", and 8 "making a fortune". When combined, they mean "happy in making a fortune" or "smooth in making a fortune." The domain was reported to have been sold recently for a mid to high 7-figure number. The seller bought it for 3m RMB.
