Hey
I have seen in some website directorys they have a feature that tells the website speed. How is this done?
thanks

[for example you can see the speed feature being used in http://centurian.org/

You can use PHP curl to crawl the URL and grab the speed information by substracting ending time after crawling with starting time before crawling :)

as xrvel mentioned, its just using simple time at start and time at end of grabbing the page info - just keep in mind that that speed is heavily dependent on both the strain your server may be under and also how... "clogged the intertubes" are (lol). (how much data transfer is going on at that moment in the general internet vicinity.)

That speed result is relative, not a real benchmark, and not accurated maybe.
There are some other tools (use Google) to make a real and more accurated measure, if needed.

In actuality, any "true" speed test is going to be relative - if you are doing the generation speed of a server-side script page, then it depends on how fast your server is. If you are testing how long it takes for a client to query a page and how long it takes before its fully loaded in their browsers, then not only does the server speed matter, but the client's download and the server's upload speeds are also factored in.

I agree with nasaboy007, i guess most tools are relative. Except you are testing it from different servers. But of course it is still relative to those servers.

For example on centurian, as long as all URLs are checked by the same server, and the result is relative to the checker host.
I guess the whole result is still relatively accurate, especially if you only want to tell if an URL is "slow", and the others are "fast" :)
