Hey y'all,

My situation is the following; my company is operating from Thailand and to bypass the government internet controls, I set up a simple CGI script last year. I never made this web site public, but for the past few months this site is generating huge amounts of traffic; June we had about 3.5 million hits generated by about 25.000 users. So far this month, we have already 2 million hits, it's getting more and more.

I am using webalizer to gain some inside to what's going on here. It shows that most requests are being made to dynamic web sites of all kinds (forums, blogs, etc). Now, is it most likely that most of this traffic is generated by other scripts or could it be possible that actually 25.000 people browse to this site?

Any ideas on what to do with this?

cheers,

Monty

Why not use your .htaccess file to deny access to anyone that is not using the IP addresses of your company.

Well, I could block access to anybody I want easily and using different methods. However, the point is not that I want to block access to it. I would like to know how to find out more about the users and possibly of a way to make some money out of it.

Thanks for responding though.

It's possible that other servers/sites are just hijacking your bandwidth using sleezeball tactics such as having your image(s) on their site pages or a script that refreshes your site over and over. A lot of shady practice like that goes on to proxies. :\

If you want detailed statistics you're going to have to install a visitor tracker like Google Analytics and Next Gen Stats

Thanks for replying. I am currently using webalizer for the stats (I set up Google Analytics as well but it doesn't seem to work).

At first I was suspecting robots as well, but after doing some research yesterday on the internet, I found loads of content being offered via our proxy. So I am pretty sure now at least a considerable part of the traffic is authentic (plus the fact the traffic has been rising steadily over the past few months).

Now I am just thinking about ways to make some money out of it. I already setup Adsense, but that's probably not going to be very profitable. Any other suggestions?

thanks!
