www.CD.com --Appraisal please

I'm working with the owner of www.CD.com to sell the name, and am curious as to your thoughts on value.

This is obviously a name with huge potential, has been registered since 1992 (two years before CDnow grabbed 'cdnow.com'), so we feel the price will be significant.

However I'd love your thoughts/feedback/appraisal.

Thank you.

You are officially brokering the domain name for the owner's of "CD.com"?
Thanks for the clarification.

Definately a strong six figure name. Could it be worth over a million to the right buyer?

Huge potential, all you have to do is find a buyer in music industry.

Whoa! Don't see a big name like this on the market very often. Definitely mid to high $xxx, xxx. Great potential for music site. Short name. Instant brand recognition. The DN has a lot going for it. Best of luck!

I think it would be a nice idea to sell it off now while CD's still are used frequently. "Soon" DVD and other medias will probably be much stronger in the market than CD.

at least mid, but probably also up to high $xxx.xxx

would have been worth more when cd's were really big.. dvd.com is what's hot.

hmm

interesting points marcus and dot - i respectfully disagree. :) don't get mad! people at other forums seem to be getting pissed at me quickly today. lol.

first, cd's still waaaaaaaaay outsell dvd's. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! to the tune of 50 to 1. How many platinum dvds you see a year? A very few. DVD's are hotter than CD's in the way that blog domains are hotter than business domains. Check this analogy :) - blog names are selling for up to several thousand - whereas a year or two ago they would sell for basically zilch. however, business domains, while not as exponentially hot, still see commerce.com sell for 180k.

As long as CD is the main music listening medium (there's no forseeable change in this is there), you're fine.
Also, there are banking cd's and a variety of other acronyms that have the initials CD. So even if Cd's, in a bizarre retroactive maneuver, are suddenly replaced by cassetes in the imagination of the music listening world, you'd STILL have a six figure domain.

You got yourself $1 mill + coming.

Cheers,
Johnny

p.s. that last line sounded like I was going to send you a million bucks, lol. I'm not.

I agree with what you're saying 100%. Ask yourself, how many dvds do you have, and how many cds do you have? I probally have 10x more cds than I do dvds.
Also, dvds are used for high space use, but for average cds, music mostly, only have about 15 songs which does not need anywhere near the capacity dvds do.

Who knows what format media content will be presented in a decade from now? The CD , w/o a doubt, is top dog at present, but w/ the exception of very broad, generic terms, (ie electronics, computers, audio), technological formats are time sensitive, and that is why I would "limit" the top end price that will be offered for this domain name. Looking into my crystal ball, I see CD.com selling for something in $100,000-$350,000 range.

The last name to sell near $1,000,000, that I am aware of, men.com, ($1,320,000), is about as generic as it gets, and does not have any dark clouds of obsolescence looming on the horizon. (Other than the human propensity for self-destruction, an errant, [from our perspective], heavenly body, or the extinction of energy and organic life, if the universe continues to expand over the next 500 billion years).

I also recall reading that the men.com marketing team had spent a year buying up "support" names before the purchase, and one can only guess as to how much time went into R&D prior to that.

Nevertheless, a great name that has appreciated well above the original buyer's reg fee.

Avitors,
You're the broker working with cd.com, and come to get a free domain appraisal?

I find that interesting because I would think that the owner of CD.com would like a broker that could appraise the domain his/herself and not rely on a free appraisal.

That domain catch fetch well over 1 million dollars.
