Can never remember this PHP function... help gratefully accepted!

This function takes a certain amount of letters off the end of a string. I can never remember it, but I am sure it is something with "str" in it.

Something like:

function($str, 0, 2); // thats what it looks like

if anyone can help I would be most grateful thanks!
