In any event, does the extension not carry the "taint" of the parent company, to you?

As long as you're not plugging the scheme.... I don't see why, the search engines sure dont and .ws is a ccTLD and follows the rules for one.

For example, I typically wouldn't want a domain name associated with such a setup / scheme because you never know when the business model will change and the domain name lose all value overnight, much the same way I wouldn't want a "subdomain."

Partially answered above - "its a cctld". As for the association with the scheme - I don't think the registry is dependent on it. Nor is the scheme exceptionally successful... hence not many people know about it. And $250 might become $0 or sell for $2500... thats always a risk in any tld.

Yes you can transfer .ws domains but not all registrars support it.
