What if there was a website where you could submit your email address, and then they in turn enter it into all of the "opt-out" or "unsubscribe" pages from all the major spammers? They would continually update their list of unsubscribe pages and every week your email address would be run through again to update. It would basically be an external spam filter. What do you think?

I think it is a great idea, but the acomplishmet of the idea seems hard to reach!

Well, someone would have to be able to write a program that goes to each unsubscribe page and automatically enters the emails, one by one. Maintaining the list would be a difficult task because there are so many new spammers each day. But it could also get to the point where you could charge people for monthly subscriptions if it really stopped the spam.

But in that theroy, you would already have to be on that spam list to be entered into the unsubscribe list. If your not, when you enter the email on that page, you will be entered into there database, and you will get spam in the future. So I dont see how that would really protect you. The only real way to prevent spam is to never give out your email. So by not entering you email, you would not recive spam. Or am I just totaly missing your point here?

All this will do is give spammers your email address. Spammers dont care if you wish to opt-out. Plus why opt-out in you never opted in?

There is some loser running a site like you described and he thinks he will get the spammers to remove the people that pay him to opt them out. I feel sorry for these people because all they are doing is confirming to the spammers that the email address has a live person at the other end.

Spam is best served fried with a slice of cheese D-:

A spam blaster program would be cool
Every time a spamer sends you spam
they would get blasted back with their spam
10 times for each one they send
Let their email box fill up

John ;)

Wouldnt work. Spammers use hijacked machines to spam with fake from addresses. If you did that you would be spamming someone who was innocent.

I think its a good concept, but it wouldnt work. It would just be too much to handle, and would requires updates like every hour. Plus, there are huge potentials for fraud, and if a spammer got a hold of everyone on the list, than you would just receive more spam :(

My spam filters (well, Gmail's) block 99.9% of the spam I get. More spam would be cool.

Not really much use and would be really hard to develop ;)

When you receive spam, it would be a mistake to follow the instructions on how to unsubscribe. As pointed out, spammers will just spam you more, as it confirms that your email address is active. The better thing to do with spam is to just delete and forget.
