I've seen some mobi sales with long words in them, even though they're all dictionary words.
Am I missing something here?
I always believed that since its .mobi, the names have to be short because of the limited typing capabilities.
Moreover, I believed that in .mobi domains, the text message lingo would work. So, Txt.mobi will be worth more than Text.mobi, and Chqs/Chks.mobi worth more than Checks.mobi
But it seems that isnt the case.
Is the industry going away from the consumer, or am I just behind the technology curve in Mobile Phone typing capabilities?

Until we see how it all shakes out with the evolution of mobile search/browsers, potential for any defaults, and alo "save as favorites" capacities ... I do believe that at this juncture - in an "on the go" web capacity - size DOES matter, IMHO. :gl:
I agree with your premise, and would not generally adivse registering looong .MOBI's without specific, unique near-term development plans, in my view. I believe there is a thread here entitled HollywoodCalifornia.mobi ... that illustrates some of the domainer/developer perspective and wishes versus those, potentially, of the immediate "on the fly" needs of the consumer. :imho:
Good topic for healthy discussion ... and, again, things are EVOLVING! :talk:

for the generation that has grown up texting this may be true, but in the business world, people text, but most won't use the abbreviations... it's just common business etiquette not too

but txt worth more than text ?... not a chance, it only appeals to those that know the lingo, while the word text already has global acceptance

chks vs checks, no way. txt vs text, maybe. Just because something is short doesn't make it good in .mobi.

What started out as a gag has turned into a decent test. I regged and did a very simple site for supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.mobi. (BTW, it does have OVT of over 10,000 so it's not a total piece of crap). I've submitted it to 2 search engines and listed it at dir.mobi and on a rare occasion mention it in a post. With almost 200 unique visits this month, it gets more traffic than any of my parked .mobi's and to date has earned over $2 in ad revenue. This lame name may actually pay for reg fee at the rate it's going. I'll expand it's reach by submitting it to some more directories after 6 months, that way I can measure the impact of the directories, sort of a before and after.

The point here is two fold. First, develop! Even a crappy name like this monstrosity can earn it's way in the world. Second, even a long name has a chance in .mobi because of the impact of search engines and directories. Sure I prefer shorter names when appropriate but a long name isn't bad by default. NYC.mobi would be awesome but so would be NewYork.mobi or NewYorkCity.mobi as well.

I actually just checked out the iPhone.
If that is the shape of things to come, then maybe long names could go. Not Scandiman's monster, but HollywoodCalifornia, PlasmaScreenTVs, etc.

But I still think that 'youth' based subjects, that is, the entire MySpace community, will do better with short forms for the .mobi than the long ones. This generation is, after all, a mobile generation that can't write without say 'r' for 'are', and 'moi' for 'my'

well i think as long as the name makes sense or it caters to certain needs it doesn't matter if the name of the domain is long.

In fact, i have sold a .mobi domain name that had more than 12 letters for $450 b'cuz it addressed the needs of a specific section of the society.
