So for a number of years I have seen domains for sale similar to this....

wwwhome.com whereas the www is actually part of the domain name.

So the domain is actually www.wwwhome.com

I found it odd that someone would register such a domain and yet almost every day I see someone using or advertising a similar type of domain.

So I thought I would make a simple yes/no poll.

Would you register a domain like this?

I wouldn't register one to sell it to a end user but if I am a company, I guess I would register it to protect the brand from phising attempts or reputation attempt from user that write wwwdomain.

These names might get typo traffic.

If Oxford University want to add it they can but it doesn't mean it will be used in a sentence or a doubled up for a domain name.

www dot www etc looks like a 1997 mistake that was renewed for age over beauty.

Personally I would not register domains like that, it is total crap. Saying that, if one knows what they are doing and have ability to study traffic keywords/trends, you can certainly pick up some terms and try to see if they can get a typo traffic. But this traffic would not be usually worth much, very low conversion.

In summary, this is a thing which was relevant probably 10 years ago when parking was booming :)

I'd concider domains like wwweb.com. Not for reselling or development but for personal use.

Yup and notice how even you got it wrong you said wwweb.com and it should have been wwwweb.com

You see it's just so unnatural

Depends... What if I added the www to eb.com? ;)

You're right though. It is unnatural and I can't think of a reason to reg them unless it's a defensive reg. I guess we'll see less of them in the future as www isn't being used much these days anyway.

There were lots of these registrations around in the late 90's and early 2000's, mostly when WWW was the spoken clarification that you were referring to a web address. (Yep you did have to back then) Companies started to make defensive registrations as the www prefix registrations increased by 'Squatters' .

I don't think any company would see it as necessary today but, those that got them back then probably just hold them. Some may have even got them off the original registrant by judgement it was an easy win if you held the Trademark.

The generic single words still in use today are just an overhang from the old days. Some people may still pick them up from the drops etc - I can't imagine you ever going to build anything credible on it
