I was talking to this person who has a nice DN,They asked me for my opinion as to what is worth.I researched the name via google,Overture,Alexa. My opinion was around $400 with all research done. They said,I have a professional appraisel for $10,000. And they said they could sell it wholesale for $5,000 today. My comment was,Well you paid a modest a fee for someone to tell you what you wanna hear,Because in my opinion that is what $39 appraisers do.After all.If they gave you an appraisel that did'nt make you happy,You would want your money back,Be disapointed and feel ripped off. They said no,There is diffrence in a REAL appraisel and an opinion,I said,Well yea,There are more knowledgable people in the business,And they would be able to give you a more detailed facts and may come to a closer figure of what the name is really worth,They said,No,A MASTER appraiser is a professional.I replied,Well,Then there are lots of master appraisers because i can buy a turnkey appraisel website off ebay for 40 bucks! LOL.Then i told them that i keep very close tabs on what's selling,The current market trend ect.And then they went on to tell me that they have the majority of there names appraised at this $39.95 price through this master appraiser.LOL,Quite an investment huh,Well i checked the master apprasiers website,It's a run of the mill 40 buck turnkey website with most probably a person that knows and gives a squat about DNs.Just thought i'd share this.LOL

That reminds me....

There are few things more sad (or embarrassing) in the domain world, than Joe Smith being told by some appraiser that his domain MyCoolBlog.com is worth $20,000, and then seeing him try to sell it, while telling everybody that it was professionally appraised.

Sounds like the old appraisal scam to me. Do a forum search for "appraisal scam" and you'll find plenty of previous discussion.

I don't really trust the *professional appraisals* unless it is from sedo or afternic, even then, I still need to research for myself.

The thing about domain names is that there really ISN'T a set dollar value to them. The ONLY thing that allows us to sell a domain for more money than we paid for it, is that someone else perceives it to have that value. You can take a domain name and ask 100 experienced people in this business what it's worth. Some may say $100 range, some may say $500 range, others $1,000. But it's the buyer who will determine what the value of the domain is worth, based on how badly they want it.

True example: I registered a domain name that would have been 'appraised' at low $xxx on these boards. I know, because I've had about 50 appraisals done here. I ended up selling that domain for $12,000, because it met the buyers needs exactly.

That's why I'll never pay for an appraisal -- it's meaningless if you're willing to wait for the right buyer to find you. If they don't, you can always unload it for a profit anyway.

...And either a steady sales stream or some cash for renewals while being patient.

Can not agree with you more. People will be tired of my story by now, but I always look back to the two domains which were valued at reg. fee which I sold for $50 each. It is what the buyer wants to pay for it.
