$200 USD logo design contest

Hi everyone,

This is Mark from DirectAdmin. I'll cut right to the chase -- our old logo is visible here:

We need this logo updated -- something a little fresher and a lot more professional. It should be a variation of this logo, but not a complete change. You can keep original colors but I wouldn't mind seeing something in a blue/grey color scheme also. We'll need the final product in a vectorized PSD file.

1. Where will the logo be used? On printed material, on the website, on the base CP skin, etc. (or all of the above)? In other words, is there anything else graphical that the logo needs to mesh with?

2. If we do use blue and gray, do you have a preference for the shade of blue that's currently in use on your site, or is that irrelevant?

I will most certainly post a series of design concepts for you in due time.

Here are the logos I've come up with. It's a mix of your old design and a a couple new ideas. As for the colours I can always alter to your wishes please don't hesitate to give me feedback

1. Logo will be used mostly on the website and in banners/buttons. Don't worry about meshing with skins.

2. If you want to use blue/grey you aren't confined to any certain shades.

We don't want this contest to run long, maybe next weekend sometime will be the deadline. A fairly large logo in PSD format is good so we can scale it down appropriately. You can see an example here: http://www.directadmin.com/da_logo.psd

Pretty good entries so far, but remember to stay true to the original logo, and keep the design clean and professional. Anything with too much detail won't be visible in a 83x31 banner/button, for example. Don't be afraid to enhance the original logo, maybe a circular border of somekind, etc etc.

and photoshop does do vector

OK, so it does, but it does it terribly. If you want to do a simple shape in vector, then yeah, you can do that, but get into gradients and other items, that's when you'll see that it doesn't do vector well. Basically, Photoshop's vector capabilities are unbelievably limited - get Illustrator instead.

Heres some first concepts from me

The lines are watermarks btw.

Also, what if you don't use photoshop to design the logo? In my designing I use a hybrid of Fireworks and Photoshop, I used Fireworks for these as I have 'always' designed logos in Fireworks so i'm more used to it.
