How can you legally sell it without owning the underlying real domain?
I know you may rent a sub-domain but selling something non-tangible seems unlikely, as you need to own the domain to have any rights to sub-domains, right?

I'm ok with it as long as the buyer is aware of what they are buying. These domains are third level domains offered by Centralnic who sells the rights to these types of domains.
They work as any other domain would, but full under the authority of Centralnic (a private company that owns .us.com) rather than ICANN.
