So here's one that hasn't asked before... .ca vs. .ru (Canada v. Russia)

certainly .ca
there aren't very many russians and they are poor. You will get a lot more hackers and totally useless traffic with .ru

Not very many Russians?
They have the 8th largest population in the world (Canada is #35, behind Poland, Tanzania, etc.)...

Easy: .CA

I have nothing against Russians, but it is my opinion that hackers, scammers and spammers have ruined the .RU TLD. About 2 years ago I started noticing a trend in spam and scam emails and websites: a .RU extension. And I am certain that I'm not the only one.

I think it will take a long time for .RU to get 100% legit again, if ever.

As always, IMO.

Population: 143,420,309 (wow! that is only 0.11 per sq km)
I wouldn't say taht it is a lot. their population is decreasing very fast and most of them do not have computers.

Even though I'm native Russian, I'd have to go with .CA, because .RU confuses many people, and is really frustrating to operate in a russian control panel. No problems for me, since I know the language but it'll be hard for a non-russian buyer. On the other hand, you have to live in Canada to legaly own .CA domains.

.ru is where people go to look for mp3 downloads, warez, virii, hacking, phreaking, cracking, etc. Its like the TLD equivalent of IRC and newsgroups all in one.

I went with .ca. The reason I did this was not because of the "bad reputation" that .ru has, as everyone mentioned before, but rather because IMO the domain market is mainly based out of North America. Don't get me wrong, I know domains are huge in other countires, like the UK, Austrailia, etc, but generally speaking, I would say domains are based out of North America. Since Canada is in North America, I think it is a better extension than .ru.

I would say that .de has a much much stronger market than .ca.

Anyway, I'm not sure how strong the market for .ru is in Russia, so Im not really sure. You can't really compare them, unless you know each country quite well.
