Hi All,

I currently have my domain name portfolio pointing to my own website (name servers) and field any inbounds through that.

However, I'm interested to understand if anyone has done any tests and has a name server preference for yielding the best sales results? I understand that the strength of the portfolio is important, but curious to understand your approach.

Do you use Afternic, Atom, Spaceship, Sedo or other name servers? Have you done tests and willing to share your findings? Curious to hear.

Many Thanks

David

I would think that the best usage is the one that offers the best visibility, correct?

If so,
is your website more visible than any sales venue?
If the answer is yes, then leave them there. If no, then start using marketplaces like the ones you mentioned.

Do you find Atom, Afternic, Spaceship or other landers bring the best visibility/ conversion for you? Do you prioritise one or do you vary across your portfolio?

I really appreciate your response.

Thanks

@xaster,
selling is not my main focus. So, my experience is of no real help.

However, there are a lot of posts from people that have used the marketplaces you mentioned who have shared their experience good and bad. I'd strongly suggest you read those posts.

edit: just remembered that there was a poll sometime ago with people sharing what they believe works for them. Unfortunately, I can't find it (I can't see any way to search only threads with polls).

If you do manage to find it, it would certainly help you. I think it is worth spending some time to look for it.

I've had decent results with Afternic because of its wider network, but I think the quality of the domain and the pricing matter more than the name servers.

The specifics of your portfolio and strategy matter but assuming you have an average portfolio and your sales are inbound: the majority of your sales will be through networks, not landing pages, landing pages make up a relatively small number of domain name sales.

Afternic are responsible for ~50% of all domain name sales. Afternic offer a 10% discount if you using their nameservers (which means using their landing pages). A 10% reduction on commission is a 10% increase in your revenue. For the average portfolio, a 10% increase in revenue would be meaningful.

The best strategy for the average portfolio:
  • List your domain names on every major platform
    1. Afternic
    2. Spaceship
    3. Sedo
    4. Atom
  • Set your nameservers to Afternic's
  • Use a Buy It Now price
You probably don't have the average portfolio though so it is worthwhile to experiment with different strategies. For example, if you're selling $2k domains to non-technical small businesses then GoDaddy's brand recognition could have a meaningful impact vs. if you're selling $100k domains to technology startups you probably can expect sales via landing pages and choose a lower commission option (like Spaceship).

edit: and as for feedback on your landing pages, they're so slow and dump the purchaser into an Escrow.com transaction. You can't assume that people are familiar with the concept of "escrow" or Escrow.com. For the type of domains you're selling, I'd guess the GoDaddy brand recognition will be meaningful.

Moreover, there are people who are familiar with Escrow.com and therefore avoid dealing with them.

@URL Stream ,
it doesn't show in your screenshot but this is what I never noticed until now:

I thought that 'search everything' contained, well, everything so I never bothered using the others. It's the 'search threads' that contains extra functions.

Thanks for the heads-up
