I am just wondering if code like this:

In the body tags would make xhtml validation fail?

why don't you just try it, lol. javascript in itself can be within the body tags and validate though.

This kind of javascript is usually xhtml compatible.

But like shickie says, you'll never know for sure unless you try it out here - http://validator.w3.org/
