If Godaddy is so bad, how do they still get a of lot of good domains in auctions?

Where do they get all the inventory for domain auctions? Do they also have a drop catch backend where they drop catch them, or are they reselling.

Or do they have some mechanism to catch all domains that drops off from godaddy? How does it work?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Expired auctions with GoDaddy are domains registered with their registrar, and their partner registrars, that have gone expired and forgotten by previous owners.

If you win an expired auction and the domain is registered with GoDaddy you have a 99% chance of receiving it after 7 days. If you win an expired auction and the domain is hosted with one of their partner registrars, as long as the owner does not move it or renew within 7 days of you winning it you will receive it.

Regular auctions are hosted by anyone that wants to sell a domain on their platform.

OK, so small registrars without an auction infrastructure come and auction them off on godaddy?
Is it mostly registrars who come and do the Auctions? When the domains dropped, who catches them first? The registrars, or professionals drop catchers to come and auction on Godaddy?
Who gets the winning money? The registrar?

Still not clear

Expired domains aren't dropped, those are deleted domains that are considered "dropped".

There is a period of time between expiration and when they are deleted off of the .COM domain Zone.

This is when an expired auction happens.

How the money is broken up is how you imagine it to be. GoDaddy gets 100% of the proceeds if they are the registrar of the domain, if their partner is the registrar the proceeds are divvied up somehow.

So with that knowledge read my previous post.

Services like DropCatch & SnapNames catch the best deleted domains first and then have auctions on their platform. Whatever happen with the domains after that auction is up to the winner. Those services keep that money.

GoDaddy does not have dropcatch auctions. They offer a service that will try and catch a deleted domain for you, but it does not work unless the domain is so bad that nobody wants it.

Got it.
SO is it the registrar who deletes the domain from the domain zone?
So if I win an expired domain auction, then they will not delete the domain, or will it still be deleted and goaddy will grab it for me?

Do drop catch etc ever catch a deleted domain of value from godaddy then?

Sorry for the continuous question

Good question.

I'm sure it happens, because 'value' can be interpreted in so many ways, but it's not likely.

For a domain to be 'dropped' by GoDaddy it would have to not receive a bid and be missed in closeouts (Zero Bid Discount section) for 7 days. So by the time it was deleted by Verisign off of the zone it would be trash.

The best dropcaught domains always come from smaller registries that don't participate in expired auctions.

So if I win an expired domain auction, then they will not delete the domain

You are correct. They will not delete the domain, it will just go to your account and it keeps its domain age.

SO is it the registrar who deletes the domain from the domain zone?

Verisign deletes the domain from the Zone (list of all registered domains) once a domain is 45 days (give or take a few days) past it's expiration and not renewed by a registry.

Thanks Bro. This was like expired domain 101
The reason why this came up in the first place was because GDD had a lot more expired domain in inventory than other popular registrars like namecheap, dyna, epik etc
