So... This is the very first time I experience this kind of bizarre situation.
Yesterday I received the following email from Snapnames:
"Congratulations on your successful transaction.
We will be processing your payment shortly for whatever.com. You will receive an update from SnapNames within 24 hours when your payment has processed successfully."
*whatever.com is just a dummy name.
The irony here is that it's the domain I just dropped intentionally! It was caught for me by Dropcatch a year ago; I tried doing some outbound and eventually decided to not renew this name.
I don't remember whether or not I put a backorder at SnapNames a year ago (I probably did since it was eventually caught), but I'm 100% sure I didn't do it this year. After I got the email, I quickly created a support ticket at Snapnames to cancel the transaction, and by the time I submitted it, my credit card was charged with $79. I could have renewed the domain for $8.50 at NameBright if I wanted
Lesson learnt! The first thing I did today is I went to my SN account and deleted all past backorders.
If you're like me and don't even know where it should be done from, it's in Pending Orders under the Buyer Dashboard menu.
What's next? I've requested a refund, but I'm pretty sure SN is going to ignore my request as they're probably well covered with their TOS.
AFAIK, NameJet is the only platform that does something similar (moves past backorders to a Wish List). Still, they send notifications when the domain is about to become available again and warn me that I have to remove my bid if I no longer want to participate in an auction.
I feel that it's wrongdoing on the SnapNames side. Thoughts?
