Brandpa's Feedback:

cultville.com - We usually avoid names with negative connotations

Anjani

Cult - a person or thing that is popular or fashionable among a particular group or section of society.
Ville - City in french
What's negative in it?
For Example - Cult movies is a popular word. Not sure if many would see it as a religious sect in this context.

Welcome your thoughts...

nerdville.com Sold for $4,299

Even Geek and Nerd had negative connotations. Maybe Cult will also become a positive term:xf.smile:

Totally right!
I could not see either any negative connotation in this domain. I could imagine a video game, a clothing brand and other things but nothing negative. But that maybe because my native language is French.

The world cult is primarily used to refer to cults. If you don't know what a cult is look up The Manson Family, Heavens Gate, Scientology, The People's Temple (Jim Jones), etc.

These kinds of infamous and deadly groups is what comes to mind when people think of cults.

You say that it means "a person or thing that is popular or fashionable among a particular group or section of society." But you have to consider how the word is used grammatically as well. It can only be used in such a way when it is used as a modifier. Accordingly, you can say that a youtube star has attracted a cult following. But when you say that the youtube star is the follower of a cult, it does not mean that the cult is "popular or fashionable". The former usage, as a modifier, would be positive - the latter usage form is pejorative in nature.

NerdVille, you chosen comp, is incomparable. Cults lie, manipulate, and even cause death. Nerds (and geeks) are just non-mainstream/shy/quirky/techy people, and while these terms were traditionally considered negative, nerd/geek culture has become really popular in recent years. Many people proudly consider themselves nerds/geeks nowadays, and there is a positive online community built around these identities (and TV shows like the big bang theory also capitalize on this trend). Big difference between the words "cult" and "nerd".

On BrandPa?

Not on Brandpa and i don't really take their word as empirical science as some of the names listed on Brandpa are a Joke like tvgap.com for $14950

*The sale of nerdville does not show on Namebio but you will see the sale price in godaddy appraisal tool if you appraise cultville.com which is appraised at $1100+

I see it as a possible TV Show or Video Game as it shows on some google searches.

I'm very new to domaining so apologies if my thoughts are useless here, but I work in entertainment and while I do understand and agree with Brandpa's reasoning, I also agree with you that it could be used for something regarding cult movies. I could very easily see this being used for a smaller film site, perhaps focusing on festivals or horror films. Also, weirdly enough, my family background involves actual cults and I know there are lots of cult watch websites and blogs that update regularly. So a couple possible uses if you wanted to put the effort into outbound there. And there are specifically a ton of cults here in Hollywood, so maybe there could be an overlap between the two for you even, ha.

Brandpa is super strict on their admissions on their platform, as they want to be focused on high-quality names. They also only send you one of a few pre-made rejection feedback notes, they were possibly other reasons such as because of the negative connotations they feel that there would not be enough interest from their target markets and that they won't be able to sell it.
I can see why they didn't take this one though for me the combination of the two words does not quite work together IMO.
With so many problems around the world with various cults I really don't see the word becoming positive my first thoughts when it comes to the word cult is extremist religious groups and mass suicide groups. I'm from the UK so you have some perspective.

I saw it as a fashionable city/ video game/ movie/tv serial and listed it for $14400 from day one:xf.smile:

One of the larger fitness chains and faster growing chains in India is called cult.fit (also cultfit.in). While I do understand the negative connotations, good branding can also overcome this.

It's their choice to reject the name. Let's just leave it at that
