Most popular domain extensions for startups in Q3 2016

After analyzing 3101 newly funded start-ups that raised a combined 11.2+ billion dollars in funding during 2015, 1085 newly funded startups who raised 5.1 billion dollars in funding during the first 3 months of this year and 1110 startups who raised 4.9 billion dollars in funding during the second quarter of this year I am back with a Q3 report which is based on 1218 startups who raised a cool 6.1 billion dollars in funding during the third quarter of this year.

Exactly one year ago the data showed that .Com was the absolute top dog with a market share of 75% with the ccTLD being the runner up with 12% and .Co and .Io claiming a combined 7% of the pie. The new gTLDs only accounted for a measly 0.5% 12 months ago. So what (if anything) has changed since then? Let’s find out!

The king of TLDs keeps it dominant position but drops around 5% compared to 3 months ago. The decrease is mainly caused by the increased popularity of ccTLDs which grew from 12.6% last quarter to 15.6% in Q3.

.Io remain in a neck-and-neck race claiming just over 4% of the pie.

I've liked .co for a short while now ... I've been buying them for the last few months after seeing a couple of small/medium sized businesses using them in their TV advertising. Although 4% might not seem like a lot .. it is huge .. I wasn't expecting it to be that high! Makes me happy to see! :)

I'm not sure when .app is scheduled to come out .. but I'm thinking it's natural end user is a fair chunk of the current .io market. That potentially could take a small slice of the pie of new start-up usage almost as soon as it starts.

Although .net is softening .. I think the start-up space is where it will stay relatively solid as it moves from a broad general TLD, back to tech/internet focused.

Thanks for sharing this data! :)

Great analysis... thank you. Glad to see .io picking up steam. I really think it will surpass .co in the next quarter. Tech keywords .io's are selling for some pretty good numbers.
