Why don't you go through domain sales reports every week.. visit namebio.com. That gives you an idea of what sells and what doesn't. Also read dnjournal domain sales report every week. If you are a newbie, Just stick to "exact match domains" ... a .com is preferable.

Actually, .io domains are very popular among tech-startup companies and entrepreneurs. Major companies also use them. microsoft owns doc.io they bought it for $24,000.. Google owns coupons.io, yahoo owns player.io.. paypal owns card.io.. I've seen .io domains sell pretty well on flippa & sedo...
