How much money have you LOST domaining?

Lost about $500 in past 3 years. Had many registered but they kept on eating up the money in renewals and finally ended up in expirations (no sales).

How safe is to buy a domain via PayPal?

PayPal could not be a good choice in this case as if something goes wrong, you cannot prove that the sender has not delivered the product to you and to get your money back. If the payment is not that big, you can take the risk.

The TLD names should not have any effect on search engines for ranking; as far as you follow their SEO guidelines for promoting these. But this may have a little different (may be negative) impact on the visitors (due to hyphens etc.) as they might think of these kind of domains as cheap or not...

Also timeline and targeted audience is a big factor in comparing the success. e.g. you cannot compare it with FB as FB is quite old compared to G+. Also in this fast changing technological world, using historical data to compare the stats cannot be quite trustworthy.

If you had diversified your link building methods in terms of anchor text and the site from where you build then this 50 directory submission probably is not going to hurt your rankings. If you only had built these kind of links then this may (not sure) affect.

Besides all these maths the old domains also have a trust being in business (or active) for so many years, and the trust matters. Also according to a popular saying "old is gold".
