I have almost 2 Decades working in IT, unfortunately I got sick a while back and am on Disability. This took me away from both of my passions which was being a First Responder and Technology.
Rather then let my enthusiasm for both sit idol, I started a Small Home Based Business, Eutopian Trader, LLC., selling Outdoors, Camping, Hunting, and Preparedness Gear.
I had to put my Business aside after breaking my back a bit over a year ago, so while the remainder of my inventory collects dust, I do brush it off every now and then and will list some stuff on some Buy Sell Mobile Apps. Now, I mostly do Small Business Consulting for some Customers of mine who also have their own Small Businesses and I try to take the years of knowledge I gained owning my own Business and my 2 decades of IT experience and try to pay it forward helping them out. It's a great way to make a little extra money to help pay my medical bills and hopefully put a little extra cheddar in my pocket.
People ask me "How are you trying to pay it forward if your charging for Consulting?" Simple, by no means am I trying to get rich, or even make a lot of money. When I charge based on how much word I actually do, I ask for very little money. Just enough to cover some of my time, and any expenses I may have had to put out. I might be able to buy myself dinner after I bill someone. So it's not about getting rich, it about enjoying what I do, helping other to not make the same mistakes I did, and share what I learned along the way, and if I can make a couple bucks I am happy! I love to teach and share what I have learned, and if the knowledge I shared makes someone else money, then sometimes, that is payment enough, just knowing that I was instrumental in some ones else's successis a great feeling.
It's very similar to volunteering as a First Responder. To know that I was able to help or save someone out who was likely having the worst day of their life and being able to help them during that time, and seeing them being able to smile because I was there for them, it's a very powerful feeling. It justifies what I do more then money ever could!
