The Future of Fear: Into the terrifying world of immersive horror

Audiences associate the word “horror” with scary movies or terrifying novels. But over the past half-decade, live theater and haunted house exhibits have merged, bringing new life to the genre with interactive, real-world experiences that let audiences step through the screen and into their own personal tales of terror. In The Future of Fear, we’re talking to the creators of some of the most striking, immersive horror experiences to see how they’re taking the genre in directions it has never gone before.
Read on... if you dare.

With AR/VR Bigger Than Ever at CES, CTA Helps Consumers Understand These Emerging Technologies

CTA announced its AR/VR Working Group has finalized a set of industry definitions to help companies better explain to consumers the spectrum of experiences their technologies deliver:

    • "Virtual Reality" (VR) creates a digital environment that replaces the user’s real-world environment
    • "Augmented Reality" (AR) overlays digitally-created content into the user’s real-world environment
    • "Mixed Reality" (MR) is an experience that seamlessly blends the user’s real-world environment and digitally-created content, where both environments can coexist and interact with each other
    • "360° Video" or "360 Video" allows the user to look in every direction around him/her
    • "Immersive Experience" is a deeply-engaging, multisensory, digital experience, which can be delivered using VR, AR, 360° video, MR and/or other technologies

Universal Studios Unveils Plans for Immersive Nintendo Theme Park

Fans of Mario are permitted to get hyped, as Universal Studios has just announced plans which will bring the character to life at theme parks in Japan, Orlando, and Hollywood.

The theme park operator has teamed up with Nintendo for a set of immersive and interactive Mario-themed attractions, shops, and restaurants. Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Universal’s Mark Woodbury described how the parks will resemble transportive “worlds” designed to make visitors feel “as if they had just walked onto [the] game platform.” Watch the video above.

Currently, there’s no word on whether other Nintendo favorites like Zeldaand Pokémon will be featured.

The same Universal locations currently host Harry Potter-themed areas, which the Nintendo project is said to mirror in terms of investment and scope.

HTC Announces Subscription Plan For Viveport

Details are sparse at this point but HTC announced a subscription plan for Vive content at CES today.

The company is not talking price, what content will be included in the plan or precisely when it will launch, saying only that pricing and content details would be revealed soon and the service would be made available in Q2 this year. But the reveal is yet another example of how HTC is aiming to grow itself into an integral part of the burgeoning VR industry.

The company is using the Vive’s speed to market with hand controllers and room-scale tracking to fill in holes in the VR market left by Valve’s Steam and Facebook’s Oculus. For example, the company’s initiatives like Viveport Arcade allow developers to license their content for timed use in new immersive arcades rolling out around the world. The Oculus Rift, on the other hand, isn’t even sold in China yet.
