Multiple backorders will be accepted on domain names.

GoDaddy has informed Domain Name Wire that it is changing the way it handles backorders for domains not registered at one of The Go Daddy Group’s domain name registrars.

As early as next week GoDaddy will begin accepting more than one backorder on domain names. (Currently only one is accepted). If GoDaddy successfully captures the domain name and more than one backorder was placed, there will be an auction on TDNAM for the domain. Only the people that backordered the domain can participate in the auction.

The new system will be somewhat similar to a non-exclusive backorder on SnapNames. However, GoDaddy will still charge an upfront $18.95 fee for your backorder. If GoDaddy doesn’t capture the expiring domain name or you don’t win the auction, you can transfer your backorder to a different domain name.

A GoDaddy representative says the company is making this change based on customer feedback. Existing backorders will not be affected by this change. Note that the new policy does not apply to domains expiring from a GoDaddy registrar, which will continue to be auctioned at TDNAM.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I'm told that this change has been implemented. Has anyone placed a backorder in the past couple days so I can check?
I spoke with a godaddy rep yesterday and was told that as of 12:01 am April 30, their backorder service has changed to allow multiple BOs for the same domain. I was also assured that any BOs made prior to the new service would be honored as an exclusive BO. I was told to call back today to speak with someone in their backorder department for clarification.

I have many BOs made prior to the new change date. Seven of them can be double backordered at godaddy now. Godaddy's rep said these seven should not have made it to the shopping cart. Neither one of us knew if these seven domains would go through to an actual backorder completed sale.

Note: It is not clear if godaddy's new service will be more successful at catching dropping domains. I wonder if they have more servers than snapnames and pool.

Well, the godaddy backorder party is over. Now what do I do for fun and profit after work? Change is not always good.

I still have received no reply from godaddy about these issues.

If it is true, why Godaddy not confirmed it by official at website or by e-mail messages?

I just got off the phone with a godaddy rep. A few days ago, I was told by them that the new backorder changes took effect at 12:01 am, April 30. Now this rep is telling me that any backorders placed on godaddy's main page after 2 pm, March 16, are subject to multiple backorders and an auction. Furthermore, any backorders exchanged or placed new from within one's account after 11:09 am, April 20, are subject to multiple backorders and an auction.

To verify this information, I submitted a support ticket days ago. I have heard nothing back. I requested documentation, and have received nothing. I asked to speak with somebody in the backorder department who could exlain and document these changes. Nothing. Although the godaddy rep was polite, he said that these issues relate to a legal interpretation of the terms of service and that I could hire a lawyer...

Lawyer? I read the terms of service, and as of today, I still see nothing written about multiple backorders. At all times from March 16th to the present, godaddy could have clearly posted on their website, in plain English, how their new backorder procedure would work, and how it is different from the old one, and when specifically it would begin. They did not. Instead, they chose to slip in the changes knowing that regular backorder customers would continue to rely upon past backorder business practices when purchasing their backorder service.

All it would have taken to put regular backorder customers on notice of the changes would have been a notice posted in red in the big box area where you type in your domain name to be backordered that read:

This backorder is no longer exlcusive. There is no limit now to the number of customers who can backorder this domain right up to the second it drops.

For backorders placed on their homepage, that same red message could have been placed in plain view on the shopping cart page.

On a closing note, I am disappointed with godaddy. Their business practices now would seems to invite litigation.

I really feel betrayed by GoDaddy :(. On April 15, I spent $984.69 on 100 exclusive backorders (using Investor's Edge + Coupon). Now just two weeks after taking my thousand dollars, they are completely changing the rules! At the very least, GD needs to offer refunds to everyone who paid for an exclusive backorder service they won't be getting! With the new rules, I have to pay money in order to help GD figure out the most valuable domains to catch so they can then make me pay even more for them at auction. Screw that! At least Snap/Pool/NJ don't charge you anything until you win a domain.

With the new system is it possible for other users to see what domains have been backordered already? You could with the old system, but that wasn't a particularly big problem since nobody else could BO that same domain.

Can anyone recommend a good $20 or less backorder service for those domains which are worth registering but not worth the $59+ you have to pay at Snap/Pool/NJ? I guess some folks here are using registrar APIs? Which ones are best? This may be just the push I need to get away from GoDaddy permanently.

Sounds to me like another cash grabbing scheme! You back order a domain, it goes to auction due to numerous other backorders. You don't end up with the domain because you were outbid or did not bother to bid and you are out $18.95!!

Hang on though.....here's the good news.... You don't get it back, you get to place it on another backorder....Whoopi doo!!

What a great idea, not!

What a ripoff. I'm losing respect for GoDaddy now :(

Yesterday I placed backorder for domain xxxx.net. Then domain deleted and godaddy intercepted this domain. But today I receive e-mail:
The domain name(s) you have backordered is now listed for auction at auctions.godaddy.com:

xxxx.NET

Because you had an existing backorder on the domain(s), you may wish to place a bid. If you are the successful bidder, your backorder from the expired names list will be applied to your purchase and will cover the cost of a one year registration. You will only pay the amount of your bid.
Godaddy deliberate silence on the changes. >:(:td:

Now domain on private auction, two bidders, auction will end after 7 days.

Backorder credit has status: "Public Backorder Capture In Progres" and I can't use it before auction end.
