The new registrants guide to .tv
If you are new to .tv, there are some nuances you should know about before registering a .tv domain.

First off .tv is officially the Country Code for the Island of Tuvalu. A tiny island in the pacific.

Through a series of transactions over the years .tv is run by Verisign corp. They paid $45 million in 2002 for the Dot TV corporation and have been running the registry since 2002. The extension has been marketed as TV, a global extension favorable to multimedia and video centric names. There are no residency restrictions on .tv. Anyone can register a .tv domain.

The .tv extension has more than one pricing level, these names known as premiums can range anywhere from $100 to $500,000 a year to maintain the registration.

You can go to http://www.enomcentral.com/domains/tv_names_browse.asp to see the full list.

The first thing you will notice is that there are names on the list that are not "Premium" They have made the list from a myriad reasons ranging from: typo, a former site that dropped, a bad filtering system that was computer generated to pick a worthwhile name.

Areas of interest such as LLL or Three Letter .tv go for $500 for the most part. There is the $1000 LLL.tv thrown in here and there. LL.tv or two letter .tv range from $1000 to $30,000 (RE.tv) There is no logical reason why RE.tv is $30,000 per year and another random LL.tv is $1000. IF your company initials are QX then you do not care that RE is more popular as far as acronyms or Western useage. QX is what you need and you could get it for $1000 per year registration.

You can find .tv domains available for sale on the secondary market at places like SEDO and Afternic the same as .com or any other extension.

You may want to know if a domain already registered is a premium domain. This is important because you may see a domain for sale you think is cheap that has a $3000 renewal fee. You can go to www.ahead.tv and use their tool to find out what the renewal is. This is important and you should always research premium domains on Ahead.tv.

If you are looking for discussion on .tv, you can go to www.namepros.com/dot-tv/ This forum is the largest forum focused on just the .tv extension.

Now if you need to register a domain that is not "premium" there are many choices. Godaddy.com,Enom.tv,Moniker.com to name a few place to register a .tv domain. Prices will range anywhere from $19.99 ( Special at Godaddy with a $39.99 renewal) $24.99 at Enom.tv to $39.99 all over the internet. Its important to point out premium domains can only be registered at ENOM.

A .tv domain can be used for any topic but seems to fit certain areas best. These include adult, entertainment, Geo centric sites suchs as Montreal.tv, product names, and how to sites.

So make sure you get familiar with: Ahead.tv, Enom for premium list, Namepros for discussion and Sedo and Afternic for secondary market .tv. Development.tv for development discussion.

Things to avoid
Premium domains you do not have a plan for, you are not going to flip too many premium domains that cost you $1000 a year or more. Its not going to happen, do not think you are special it did not happen in a good economy and is not going to happen in a bad economy.

Quantity, be careful owning too many .tv, if you have no plans to develop anything look for up to 5 good names to hold for investment. Look for a quality domain not a cool sounding one, but a good name that has a meaning to most people in your language or another language you know.

What works in .com does not work in .tv. e words or I words unless they are of the top 100 to 200 Keywords probably will not sell for more than $50. Personally I like Idomain.tv for development. Hyphenated names do not work in .tv unless you are developing and still seems to be a bad registration.

L-L-L a lot got dropped in Oct and Nov 08 these names are worthless in .tv.

Three Word .tv are not a great choice unless it is a popular name taken in over 10 extensions including popular cctld.

Typos do not work in .tv, the only ones that get traffic are someone tm squatting a developed .tv. Generic typos are worthless do not waste your money.

No one is looking to buy a reg your made up the name for even $100 this is not .com do not waste your money. If you regged Discover*** someone will reg explore**** or goto******** where these are good names in .com, that is mostly because all variations are taken in .com. Not that these are bad names to develop with but if you looking to sell to another .tv reseller there will be little interest for anything more than the reg fee.

Because ENOM made a name a premium does not mean that the plural or you adding a letter makes it almost as good or a premium for non premium pricing.

Know why you chose .tv, know that it has some house rules a little different to most other extensions.

Know that you can be successful with any extension.

This is an extension where knowledge matters even more than it does in other extensions because of the premium pricing, and history of the extension. If you are looking to get rich fast, find another business that's not going to happen here.

If you can own the .com version of your .tv get it.

Thanks for this excellent guide that will be very useful for every newbie who gets interested in .tv domains.

It's not always easy for them to find all the information they need in one place. You've done a great job compiling all of it in this guide. :tu:

Wow great information, thank you. I only own one .tv and it is a four letter dictionary word which is in the process of development. My first reaction was to get the .com but it would have been a six to seven figure domain. It is a you tube style site so I think I can get away with the .tv extension in this case. The one thing I really did not like is the $500 registration and the $500 renewal every year. It really feels more like I'm leasing the domain than owning it.

For what you were saying with RE.tv, one reason why RE.tv is worth more, it is the abbreviation for Real Estate :)

Patrick, no matter what the price or extension, all domains are only leased to the registrant...... Nobody actually owns any of the domains they have registered.

Well that is true, I guess the $500 renewal fee makes it feel more so. The average $7.49 renewal fees are so small I just think of them as maintenance :)

I understand, maybe that $500/yr will seem like peanuts in a couple of years when the extension really comes of age. ;)

I'm sure the $500 will seem like peanuts when the site takes off the way I am hoping. As long as it's making money I'll have no issues :)

I can't wait to share my project with everyone, it should be done in the next couple of days.

Plus .tv even though I only own the one domain, I would say it is my second favorite extension. It just makes sense, as long as your intent is an online show of sorts. Even TNT gets it. Everyone time I watch basketball games on TNT I see TNT.tv, very smart.

I kind of see it the same as you Patrick. I only have 2 myself, largely because the premium renewals are expensive and I want to make sure I can get around to getting them developed, however I really do like the extension and it is one of the few extensions other than CNO + cctld that I've seen heavily used by endusers.

Hmmm I would bet money that one of your two is LLLL.tv. Look at that, I did a quick whois and guess who owns it, -REECE- :tu:

Yep, LLLL.tv and I have LI.tv which I'm hoping to make my development project for this week to make a mini-site about Long Island on.

Nice keep us posted on the projects. I'm a little shocked your not flipping LI.tv, from my understand that is a popular last name in Asia.
