What better place than here! Of course I am a newbie, and this is probably one of the dumbest ?'s you'll ever hear:
What exactly is a MySql database used for? What purpose does it serve? Is it mainly for big sites or does it work well for small-mid size sites? Is it necessary to have a MySql if you want to have a forum? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

HEHE, a mysql database is used comonly in forum scripts. When you post, it creates another entry in the table or database for easy acess by a user in there web browser.

php is used for many things, it can do almost any task possible or dreamable. Php is tied in with mysql because you use php to acess the mysql databases where your information is. Without php, there would be no mysql, I dunno about asp thoguh, so never mind that comment lol.

In most cases, yes, its necessary to have mySql to make a forum.

MySQL Can be used in any type of site, from 1 unique hit a day to 1 trillion unique hits a day, I would say over %90 of all websites use mysql and php for something, if not %100.

FG - Some pretty odd answers there but no problem. "...a trillion hits a day...99% of sites use it - if not 100%..." - I bet oracle and mirosoft etc are shaking in their boots :D
