What is the surest way to tell which backorder service registered an expiring domain name

check the whois record for the registrar of record. The (again) go to whois-search and look who that registrar catches domain for.

This should give you a good idea which service was used.

Snapnames did pretty well until namescout quit catching for them and started for pool. I see a high majority of pool catches being done by namescout.

I post a list of domains daily, which shows which dropcatcher caught what for the previous day.

I also have a script that will be available soon in the members section which will allow you to add in bulk, a list of domains, and it will give you the results of which dropcatch service caught each name. Currently in beta testing, and only works for .com and .net currently processing about 100 domains per second.
