I got into website design and marketing early—March 1995 to be exact. In those days, Internic gave away domains, but only if you had your own DNS and you had to fill out a UNIX template besides—which only my ISP could do—and they wanted $125 per. Later on, I obtained my own co-located server and could register names myself.
I've only registered domain names for the purpose of developing them, never for flipping or resale.
The first name I ever registered was astro.com, which I was using as my company's home page. A few months later, I needed some money, and when someone made me an offer, I sold.
That's happened to me more than once: I'd register a name for my own use, then somebody would offer to buy it:
VegasWeddings.com, Tyro.com, Imagination.org, Tyro.com, Tricks.com, BetWire.com . . . and the list goes on.
For the last dozen or so years, I've been doing Content Marketing professionally (I have a Master's Degree in Journalism) and have made a good living creating Panda-compliant content for organic search.
