Hyphens or no hyphens for different pages?

I've read a few articles suggesting that it is best to use hyphens in the links to different pages within a site, as the SE's read them as a space and it is easier for them to distinguish between words/phrases.

For example: "books-on-tape.html"

as opposed to: "booksontape.html"

any suggestions?

It's indeed better to use hyphens.

Yes, hyphens seperate the keywords and they reffer the search bot to the keyword again!

does anyone know whether camelNotation helps out the SEs at all?...

I don't think SE's can differentiate in all cases that there are separate words then.
For instance: penIsland.html may mean to you Pen Island but it can also be perceived as Penis land by the SE's.

So this wouldn't be helpful. Hyphens is the better choice to make.

I'm not so sure about this. Perhaps hyphens helped a few years ago, but now Google seems pretty good at spotting keywords even without them.

Do a search for a single keyword, and scan down the results. You'll see the keyword highlighted in domains like this: thisisthekeyword.com; you may also see some like this: domain.com/keyworddirectory/.

If Google can highlight the word when it isn't separated by hyphens, then doesn't that suggest that hyphens aren't necessary to point Google to the keyword?

Or am I missing something?

It still helps :)

Tim, it is indeed true that Google can in a lot of cases differentiate since it shows you it can but wouldn't it be better to stay on the safe side and keep it as clear as possible?

Why take the chance right?
It's good practice.

ok thanks. i just did a search and google is able to distinguish my keywords (yay). for the rest of you, if google isn't picking them up then throw in some hyphens.

aside: i was always taught that camelNotation was good practice... but then again that was programming class, not seo class :)

Yes, always use hyphens to distinguish separate words in your Page Titles and File names, Metatags, Alt Tags.

I would think that it's better to us - than to use A . the main thing is to use keywords that help with seo!
