Now it may be a case of bad timing/luck on my part, but i signed up for a vps at vpsbyte a day ago because their offering is very attractive.

First, the vps came with a version of webmin which was from 2006 i believe.

Second, the server would not install or upgrade any package from a url, I had to download first.

Then, the killer. my ip's stopped resolving. the main vpsbyte.com site stopped resolving. Then the client area stopped resolving.
And for the last 12 hours or so, this has been the case:

Checked From:
Washington, DC (3 Mbps) 17:01:57 Cannot Resolve Dns for [vpsbyte.com] 0.00 0.00 0

Santiago, Chile (760 Kbps) 16:56:52 Cannot Resolve Dns for [vpsbyte.com] 0.00 0.00 0

Dortmund, Germany (5 Mbps) 16:56:49 Cannot Resolve Dns for [vpsbyte.com] 0.00 0.00 0

Los Angeles, CA (1.5 Mbps) 17:55:34 Cannot Resolve Dns for [vpsbyte.com] 0.00 0.00 0

Beijing, China (5 Mbps) 16:52:07 Cannot Resolve Dns for [vpsbyte.com] 0.00 0.00 0

Chicago, IL (45 Mbps) 16:56:51 Cannot Resolve Dns for [vpsbyte.com] 0.00 0.00 0

St. Petersburg, Russia (5 Mbps) 16:56:40 Cannot Resolve Dns for [vpsbyte.com] 0.00 0.00 0

Gloucester, UK (5 Mbps) 16:56:52 Cannot Resolve Dns for [vpsbyte.com] 0.00 0.00 0

Sydney, Australia (5 Mbps) 16:57:07 Cannot Resolve Dns for [vpsbyte.com] 0.00 0.00 0

Now, any host can have a bad day. I'm not mad at vpsbyte, but it's not a good first day :( I'm certainly not impressed, and I won't be able to recommend them to anyone.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Hm.. And you contacted the provider several times, right? And what did they say on that?

Yes I raised a ticket with them before their client area went down.

When everything came back up, their explanation for the downtime was a power fault.

Regarding installing from urls, they advised me to turn iptables off and ensure named was running, however it seems to be working now without me doing anything.

Their support has been good, very helpful, polite and apologetic for the downtime.

I sincerely apologize about the problems you had. I did find your account in our system, and did see that the node that you were on was the same one our main site is on - since the node went down because of a power failure (on the server), it did make it look as if the entire network was down. Even though about 10 VPS clients were offline including our site, we did credit almost all of them. If you could please PM me the exact times you were unable to connect to your VPS, I will credit every second of downtime onto your account :).

We are here to provide a reputable and great service to everyone. We know we are not perfect, and we do have problems here and there - but because of this, we want to make sure our relationship between each client remains the same and that we can continue hosting your VPS for months to come.

I do expect your PM, and do hope we can continue to do business with you.

Apology accepted!

There's really no need for a credit ( the plan i'm on is the cheapest i could find for the features anyway )

I do plan on staying with you, as I'm not aware of any other vps provider which offers a comparable package for the price, and your support has been excellent, which is all that can really be expected when things go wrong.

Just don't go down again any time soon! :p

Nice. I have noticed many times that forums become the place where the problems have been sold.
