For all the beginners, I am no expert in this but there is some advice I can give you basis my interaction with a number of newbies and from my experience with domaining over a number of years.
When starting off, if you are investing in any extension other than .COM, you may be making a mistake. While some of you may get lucky once or twice and may later move to premium names from the return that you made from the lucky sale, others may have a hard time.
If you are spending your money in any extensions which can be classified as a new gTLD and paying $20 per name or more, when starting off, you should reconsider your options and try to invest in .COMs, while you understand the game.
If you are going for .live, .art or .something which is other than .COM (in some case, maybe .NET or .ORG or something that you really understand and get a hang of), do not invest.
It will get you tired and worked out pretty fast. It is very important to get the learning properly in the beginning for the journey to be shorter and profitable.
I struggled, you shouldn't!
