I'll be attending college this fall, close to a month from now and I'll need a laptop.

I have a lot of money saved up from work, graduation, etc. Any suggestions?

Please link me to the product page, if you have experience with the laptop, why you like it, etc.

It all depends what you use it for. Are you looking for something super light and protable that you can easily bring to class? Or something more like a desktop replacement? And what will you be using it for?

It does depend on what you are going to use it for, but I would recommend checking with the college that you are going to as to whether they have any suggestions for you. A lot of times colleges and universities get pretty substantial discounts on the laptops because they refer so many sales. Buying the university laptop also normally ensures that the tech staff at the school will fix your pc for free, whereas they may charge money for your own personal laptop. If your university doesn't offer any of these packages, then I would be glad to point you in the general direction of some good laptops, just let me know...

Check with your college first. It depends upon what you're gonna major in. I went with a P4 HT because I thought I was going to major in computer engineering. I'm now an English major, so I could have gone with the more mobile technology and not so much power. (No web design major available.)

If you do any type of gaming then don't get a Mac, lol. Unless you like tetris, hahaha.

I have a Dell. I upgraded it and it cost about $2.5k. I have had 0 problems with it! Don't buy HP or Sony. Had nothing but problems with those things.

If you don't need anything special, my suggestion is to get any brand laptop with the following specs:

Intel Mobile Celeron 1.5 GHz
512 DDR RAM
40-60 GB harddisk
Wifi
CD+DVD burner

This is perfect for doing everyday stuff, it's cheap and you will get al ot of battery hours too. I had used a HP for 6 months, no problems at all. I sold it a year ago and the current owner is happy too.

Don't get a Mac. As cool as they are, most of the computers that the university will have our going to be PC's. Teachers will not be able to assit you, support will be bad, and some games are not on it. Not to mention Macs are a waste of money.

I would reccommend Acer, I have heard good things about them. Dell is not bad either if your looking for something cheaper.

I see you're already going for a Mac. I feel sorry for you. At my college, in engineering, you have to run software programs for some classes that simply don't run right on Macs. Sure, Macs say they can run it, but the Macs always give it problems and don't work for some particular required programs. Avoid the trouble and get a real pc. I got a dell e1405 and it's nice, powerful, lightweight, and portable.

Kill the MAC idea..that's my suggestion. You will only hamper your studies with time trying to get software for your mac to work right.

My preference for laptops is lightweight as you can get. Averatec has a serious of laptops that are 4.4lbs and have DVDrw/CDrw built in. It's not a gaming machine though but damn it's sexy.

If you have a 6lb+ laptop...you will quickly tire of carrying it around.
